Crew Leader, Concrete Maintenance

Department - Fleet and Transportation Maintenance

Job Summary:

The Incumbent builds, erects, aligns forms for various concrete structures and foundations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.  Build, set and align concrete forms and apply fine concrete finishing methods in new construction and rebuild of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, playgrounds equipment foundations and related structures.
2. Provide estimates of concrete quantities, appropriate mixes of sand and cement if concrete is hand mixed. 
3. Cut and place reinforcing wire mesh, prepare appropriate sand and cement mixtures and place, pour and rough level of concrete.
4. Fine finish concrete by floating, troweling, edging and brushing in accordance with specifications.
5. Interpret blueprints and read survey stakes to establish grade and estimates volume of concrete required for specific job.
6. Direct a small group of labourers engaged in mixing and placing concrete as required.
7. Maintain an inventory of supplies, order and purchase replacements in a timely fashion in accordance with City procurement processes.
8. Maintain accurate records.
9. Act as Heavy Equipment Operator 1 or 2 as assigned.
10. Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, establishes safety procedures and standards.
11. Other related duties

Working Conditions:

Four 10 hours shifts per week Sunday to Saturday between 0700 and 0700. Exposure to dust/dirt, road conditions, high traffic areas (vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist), fumes/odours, bodily fluids/waste, temperature extreme, inclement weather, noise requiring hearing protection when  performing duties. Heavy lifting over 25 kgs. is a regular requirement.

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:

• Grade 12 with an equivalent combination of training and experience in all phases of concrete work.
• 3 years previous experience and 6 months on the job training.
• Valid Class 1 driver's license with air endorsement.
• Traffic control course (14 hours)
• Fall Arrest (7 hours)
• Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in concrete construction and maintenance.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work.
• Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
• Ability to interpret blueprints and make simple calculations in order to read surveys stakes and calculate areas and volumes.
• Ability to instruct and direct the work of unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.
• Ability to maintain simple accurate records.
• Skill in the use and care of hand and small power tools associated with the work.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Examples of Equipment to Operate:

A variety of heavy equipment and accessory equipment including but not limited to: loader with attachments, snow blower, small backhoe, tractor trailer, rubber tire backhoe, dump truck (including sander, hauling snow, underbody, etc); vibratory roller, mobile sweeper, 1 ton truck, trailers, trailers, towed sweeper, 3 ton vibratory rollers, skid loader (bobcat), tar kettle, jackhammer, cut-off saw, chainsaw, tamper, pull broom, pavemaster roller, and cement mixer, service van, water pumps, generators, hand and power tools, electric winch crane, fork lift, diesel compressor, diesel and gas vibratory compactors, rental equipment, ride on sweeper, tool cat, line painting equipment, tree chipping, water and metal detectors, winch/tripod harness, communications equipment and computer applications such as Outlook, Word & ERP.
